Definition
The HIS is the core software that runs all administrative and clinical processes of a hospital or healthcare provider: admissions, outpatient clinics, inpatient stays, test orders, prescriptions, billing, stock and reporting in one system. It talks to laboratory analysers, imaging (PACS), pharmacy and payers via HL7, ASTM and web services. In Türkiye the reporting of health records to the central national system is done through the HIS. The server, database, network and backup beneath it are as critical as the software itself: when the HIS stops, the hospital stops. Redundant servers, UPS and a tested disaster-recovery plan are therefore part of HIS infrastructure.
