Cat6 and Cat6A are performance categories of copper network cable. Cat6 carries 1 Gbit/s up to 100 metres and 10 Gbit/s over short runs (about 55 metres); it is the common choice for office outlets and cameras. Cat6A carries 10 Gbit/s over the full 100 metres and is better shielded against external noise; it is preferred for server rooms, wireless access points and new buildings planned for the next 15 years. Connectors, patch panels and outlets must be in the same category as the cable, otherwise the chain is only as fast as its weakest link. The category is printed on the cable and verified with a certifier. The price difference is small next to the cost of re-cabling.

For new installations we use at least Cat6, and Cat6A for server rooms and access points, and certify every link with a tester.
