Disaster recovery is the plan and infrastructure prepared in advance to bring information systems back into operation after fire, flood, hardware failure, ransomware or human error. Unlike backup it aims to restore not just the data but the whole system (servers, network, applications, access) within a defined time; that time is the RTO and the accepted data loss the RPO. The solution scales with the business: a standby server at a second site, a dormant copy in the cloud or simply a rebuild from a tested backup. The plan's value is measured by rehearsal; a disaster-recovery plan that has never been tested is an assumption.
