A VPS is a virtual slice of a physical server in a data centre reserved for you: your own operating system, admin rights and fixed resources (CPU, memory, disk); you share the hardware with others but cannot see each other. It suits websites, small applications, VPN endpoints and test environments. Its advantages are fast setup and a fixed monthly cost; its limits are shared resources and data that lives in the data centre. For heavy databases or data that must stay on your premises, an on-site server is preferred.
