Definition

A VPN builds an encrypted tunnel between two points over the internet and makes a remote device or branch part of the company network. It has two uses: a site-to-site VPN joins the networks of two offices permanently; a remote-access VPN connects the laptop of someone working from home or in the field to the office. Traffic is encrypted and cannot be read from outside. Security should rest on certificates and multi-factor authentication rather than passwords; a VPN where everyone shares one password is a vulnerability. Putting remote desktop behind a VPN instead of exposing it directly to the internet is the most basic protection.

How SMB Teknoloji uses it

We set up site-to-site and remote-access VPNs on the firewall, with certificates and multi-factor authentication, and close remote-desktop ports that were exposed directly to the internet.
