Definition
A hypervisor is the software layer that makes virtualisation possible: it shares the physical server's CPU, memory, disk and network card between virtual machines and isolates each from the others. There are two types: type 1 runs directly on the hardware (the standard for servers) and type 2 runs like an application inside an operating system (for developer PCs). The hypervisor's management interface is where virtual machines are created, moved, snapshotted and assigned resources. Commercial and open-source options exist; because licensing models have changed in recent years, the choice is being re-evaluated for cost and support.

We choose the hypervisor by licence cost, existing skills and support continuity, with the reasoning in writing; migration from the current environment to a new platform is planned without stopping operations.
