A backup is a regular copy of live data taken so it can be restored after corruption, deletion or ransomware; its purpose is a quick return to the previous state and it usually covers the last weeks or months. An archive is the long-term, unchanging store of data no longer in active use but required by law or business: old invoices, finished projects, camera recordings. Backups are taken often and deleted often; archives are written rarely and kept for years. Putting both on the same disk is a common mistake: mixing archives into backups bloats them, and treating a backup as an archive loses old data.

In backup installations we apply the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, two different media, one off-site or offline. Archives get a separate immutable target and a retention period; restores are tested monthly.
